Description
A one-of-a-kind cherry hollow form that celebrates the natural contrast between the heartwood and sapwood of the tree.
This 7-inch wide by 4-inch tall vessel was turned from black cherry and shaped as a graceful, organic form. The naturally lighter sapwood has been transformed through hand carving into a field of individually defined, pebble-like forms.
Pyrography was then used to burn the dark outlines between the carved areas, creating dramatic contrast while emphasizing the organic pattern and three-dimensional texture. The result is a contemporary sculptural vessel that combines the natural character of cherry with hand carving and woodburning.
The opening at the top and the sweeping transition between the carved sapwood and surrounding cherry create a sense of movement across the form.
Finished with multiple coats of shellac to enhance the warmth and natural grain of the cherry while providing a smooth, protective surface.
