Care Instructions

  • In most cases the underside of the piece you have purchased will have 1 or 2 letters burned on the bottom of the item.  These letters indicate the type of finish used.
    • (B) Beeswax):  Beeswax is used to provide a protective coat without yellowing the wood.  I typically use this on spalted woods.   To refresh apply a thin coat of mineral oil or a mineral oil/beeswax mix , allow it to soak in, and then buff with a clean cloth
    • (LB or TT) Linseed / Beeswax:  This is my go-to finish on most bowls and platters.   I use a product called Tried and True Original. Refresh the finish with mineral oil or cooking oil as needed, similar to a cutting board.
    • (S)Shellac:  Shellac is used on most artisan works and on wood where a durable and hard finish is desired.  I make my own shellac by mixing shellac flakes with neutral spirits (151 grain alcohol!)  This is a durable finish that should not need redone, but if needed gently sand the surface to remove any scratches or surface stains, then apply a new coat of shellac.  Shellac will dissolve in alcohol.  Do not use alcohol based products to clean!
    • (P) Polyurethane:  This is used occasionally on decorative items and all ornaments.  Dust with a soft cloth.
  • Mortar and Pestle: These have been burnished at high speed to seal the grain/  They contain no finish, as to not add flavors to any herb or spices.
  • Rolling Pin:  These are finishes with Tried and True.  Refresh with mineral oil or any cooking oil.
  • Segmented Bowls:  Segmented bowls are constructed using waterproof glue.
  • Vases:  Please do not add water directly to vases.   Vases are designed as stand alone artisan works that enhance the inherent beauty in the wood and your home.  Dried flowers are OK to add but live flowers must be placed in an insert to prevent moisture from coming in contact with the vase.
  • No Markings: Some early works do not have markings for the finish.  ALL FINISHES that I use are food safe.
  • Gentle Care: Hand-wash with a damp cloth and do not submerge and do not place is a dishwasher!
