Description
This one-of-a-kind decorative bowl is hand-turned from elm crotch wood, prized for its dramatic grain movement and natural tension. The piece was turned while the wood was still green and then allowed to dry slowly, encouraging organic movement that gives the form its distinctive character.
As the wood dried, the natural split at the crotch section was carefully reinforced with epoxy to ensure long-term stability while preserving the visual intensity of the grain and opening. Flowing growth lines radiate outward from the center, creating a strong sense of energy and direction across the surface.
The bowl is refined with a smooth interior and balanced proportions, allowing the natural features of the wood to remain the focus. This piece is intended primarily as a decorative or sculptural work, highlighting the expressive qualities of the material rather than uniform symmetry.
Finished with shellac, the surface has a warm, refined sheen that enhances contrast and depth while protecting the form.
Made individually on the lathe, this piece reflects the same standards as my juried art show work and is a single, finished piece—not part of a production run.
Finish: Shellac (S).
