Stabilized Punky Maple Vase – Hand-Turned Wood Vessel with Stone-Like Finish

$280.00

This one-of-a-kind vase is hand-turned from punky maple, a fragile wood known for its dramatic grain and soft, mineral-like coloration. Rather than discarding the material, the wood was carefully stabilized with multiple applications of thin polyurethane, allowing its complex figure to be preserved and transformed into a durable finished form.

The vase is turned to approximately 1/2″ wall thickness, creating a substantial presence while maintaining balanced proportions. Progressive sanding through 3000 grit followed by a polyurethane finish produces a smooth, stone-like surface with exceptional depth and clarity. The result is a tactile object that reads as both wood and mineral, inviting close inspection.

Flowing grain patterns and natural line work remain visible beneath the refined surface, emphasizing the contrast between the wood’s original fragility and its finished strength. This piece is intended primarily as a decorative or sculptural vessel.

Made individually on the lathe, this piece reflects the same standards as my juried art show work and is a single, finished piece—not part of a production run.
